Legislative Leadership Award

Jose Solorio
Assemblyman, 69th District

Jose Solorio represents the citizens of the 69th Assembly District, which includes Central Orange County and the cities of Anaheim, Garden Grove and Santa Ana.

His election in November 2006 was the culmination of a lifetime of overcoming odds and striving to achieve.

Assemblyman Solorio has taken his position as a California elected official to heart by providing strong leadership on pressing matters before the Committee on Public Safety which he chairs. While working on improving schools, creating jobs, and preventing gang violence, he has worked very closely with law enforcement leadership to ensure sound public safety policy.

Assemblyman Solorio works very closely with law enforcement to help them have the tools needed to make all Californian’s safer in their communities. He has introduced a bill that would require the Attorney General to provide
criminal history information to city attorneys pursuing civil gang injunctions
or drug abatement actions and would enhance the existing law requiring the Department of Justice to maintain specified criminal history information. It would also require the Attorney General to supply that information to specified law enforcement and other entities, as prescribed. This will be a great tool for local law enforcement.

He also introduced a bill that enhances existing law that makes it an offense to openly display or expose an imitation firearm in a public place, as defined. This bill would include public schools within the definition of “public place”, helping to make our schools a safer place for our children.

Assemblyman Solorio introduced a bill dealing with crime prevention and criminal gangs. Existing law creates several crime suppression programs. This bill would make legislative findings relating to gang violence and the lack of a state program that is specifically designed to coordinate multijurisdictional task forces that target gang activity. Iin the Office of Emergency Services, this bill would establish a program designated as the High Intensity Interstate Gang Activity Areas Task Force, as specified. This bill would provide that the purpose of the task force is to formulate a comprehensive strategy for addressing high intensity gang activity throughout the state and to advise the Office of Emergency Services on the appropriate disbursements of funds to regional high activity gang areas. This bill would require the task force to submit a report, as specified, to the Legislature no later than January 1, 2009.

These are just a few bills showing Assemblyman Jose Solorio’s concern for the citizens of California and their safety. That is why the Golden Badge Foundation is proud to present to Jose Solorio the Foundation’s Legislative Leadership Award.
